As volunteers at the NHA, there are many, many pets who touch our hearts. But there aren’t that many who touch our hearts and literally leap out of the cage! Tash, fka Garfield, did just that – leapt right into my husband’s arms and we knew he was ours. He was the dictionary definition of kitten – aggressive cuddler, loud purr-er and, now, nearly two years later, he still finds joy in everything from paper bags to insects to a pile of laundry. What a gift and treasure he is – thanks NHA for keeping him safe until we could find him.

We adopted 1-year-old Rosey (formerly Rochelle) in June of 2011. Originally labeled as a "corgi mix," our vet confirmed that she is probably a basenji mix, maybe with some whippet or chow, due to her dark tongue. Rosey loves to run in our back yard, chase birds, play with our teenage son, and give an abundance of doggy kisses. Weekends are spent running errands (she loves to ride in the car) and going to the dog park. She has amazed us with her lightning speed and tremendous leaping ability. She also loves her chew toys, even though she sometimes confuses our "toys" (wallets, clothing, recyclables) for hers. We are still working on that! She is a sweet and loving dog, and we are so thankful for the love her previous owners gave her, which is apparent in her happy and friendly personality. This was definitely a win-win adoption!

My boyfriend and I moved to Nashville in August 2010 with plans of adopting a cat once we got settled in. Just a couple weeks later, on our first trip to the NHA we fell in love with a 2 month old kitten that we named Mikko (formerly Cletus). Mikko has been the best cat we could ever ask for! He's so laid back and very smart. He also loves to go for rides in the car! However, around spring time we could tell that Mikko was getting bored with just having us to entertain him. After some discussion, we decided that he needed another cat to play with. We did a lot of looking around to try to find the perfect match for Mikko. On just our second trip to the NHA in May 2011, we found a one year old cat named Franklin. I immediately fell in love with his sweet nature and knew he would be a perfect fit. We brought him home and renamed him Milo. It only took about a week for Mikko (right) and Milo (left) to bond. They love to chase each other around the apartment, wrestle and snuggle to...

It fits her personality and she now recognizes when we call her name. She is not nearly as skiddish as she was and is actually bonding with our Golden Retriever, Molly. Bug is pure attitude and full of character. My boyfriend and I just love her so much, and she is such a welcome addition to our family. We are working on crate training and leash walking, and that was slow at first but is now coming along very nicely. She sleeps in our bed each night and is so cute because she snores a little and makes "cooing" noises. Her favorite place to be is on the sofa and she has no qualms about letting me know when it's time for me to pick her up and put her there. Today, we are enjoying a lazy Saturday on our back deck. She is the sweetest little dog ever! She has come a long way since we adopted her, and it is so w...

I adpoted Maximus last February and Solomon (originally "Honeybear") last October because Max needed a friend and an impetus to exercise a little more (he was named Maximus for a very good reason). Max and Sollie became fast friends, and I adore them both! They're both extremely affectionate, silly, and well-behaved, and they're fantastic cuddlers. Sollie likes to curl up on my chest when I read, and Max follows me around my house like a shadow. I love coming home to them everyday, and my friends love to come over and play with them. I'm so thankful to the Humane Association for introducing me to such lovely fellas!

My family was looking to adopt a cat to make our family whole. We came to the Nashville Humane Association hoping to find a match for us. After walking up and down the aisle in the cat room (about 20 times), talking to each cat, and even holding a few, my eye kept drifting back to this little gray sweetie. I had looked online before coming to the shelter, and saw a cat that I was sure to adopt, yet for some reason the gray cat just stood out. So we ended up choosing him. That was the best choice we ever made! His name was Ernie, and he was there with his brother Bert. We've now changed his name to Fred and love that cat to death. He is the most confident, loving, playful, outgoing cat that I've ever seen. He's number 1 and he knows it. Thank you Nashville Humane Association for allowing us to have this wonderful creature.

I wanted to share our adoption story with you. We went to the shelter just before Christmas looking to get a cat/kitten friend for our stray kitten who adopted us in October 2010. My husband and I split up with the kids, I going to the cat room and my husband wandering off to the dog area. I quickly found a beautiful all black girl named Midnight (now Sheba) with a very sweet disposition who was about a year old. My husband came in to tell me that we needed to go look at the puppies. I said Sure we can always get a cat and a dog."

Upon entering the room, the first kennel to my right had a sweet little boy who was shaking. We went and looked at the other pups, but I came back to Dax (now Roscoe) and took him out. The instant we picked him up, we knew he needed to come home with us.

We brought both Roscoe and Sheba home and they are both so loved and have fun everyday playing with all their friends - Roxie our female lab/shepherd mix we adopted from NHA 8 years ag...

We adopted Biscuit just two short months ago, but it seems like she has been a member of the family for years. My husband and 7 year old daughter stopped by the NHA without the the intention of adopting a dog that day. We had been discussing the possibility of adoption, but my daughter has been fearful of energetic and jumpy dogs, so we were convinced that now was not the right time. But then along came Biscuit...one of the most loving, sweet, loyal, and gentle dogs I have ever encountered. She is lazy inside, but LOVES a nice long walk. She immediately sensed my daughters apprehension, and from the very first moment has been extremely gentle with her. Although she came to us quite overweight (we call her big boned!), she has lost close to 10 pounds and is enjoying running and being a dog again.

Biscuit was clearly well-loved by her previous owners, and we appreciate that she was taken care of (and trained) so well. Thank you very much for the opportunity of adopting such an amazin...

Please meet our dog, Lilly who was adopted from the Nashville Humane Association in April 2010. We had just lost one of our dogs, Chester, after having him for 17 wonderful years. Lonliness cannot express what we, along with our dog Lucy, were feeleing. I thought I would go "just to look" at what the shelter had to offer.

After looking at a lot of dogs, we came to Lilly's cage. She was not barking or jumping like the other dogs were. She just sat there pleading with her beautiful brown eyes. My heart, as well as my mother's and nieces, Chloe and Alley, instantly melted.

We took her for a walk and before that walk was over my mother and I were both crying with happiness! I called my husband and said that "I am brining Lilly home -- tell Lucy she has a new sister!"

She is the most loving dog, and we could not have found a better match for Lucy. Thank you for the Nashville Humane Association for bringing such joy into our lives!

I came to NHA that day in search of a sweet dog as a Christmas present for myself. Baxter is 5 years old, and at first like most people I was hesitant about adopting an older dog, but having him has completely changed my thinking. When I got Baxter home I discovered that he was already house broken, knew several tricks such as sit, shake, lay down and roll over. Baxter is still a very active boy, and loves to go walking or jogging with me either in the neighborhood or in Centennial Park. He goes almost everywhere I go!

Your staff was also extremely helpful with making sure that Baxter was the right fit for my home since I also have two cats and wanted to make sure that he would do well with them. A staff member brought a cat into a visitation room with Baxter and I, so that I could see how he woul...

I had looked at almost every dog in the place before I found her. She was quiet and sweet. She followed me into the play area and immediately stole my heart.

Immediately, I called my boyfriend to swing by the shelter before making our important decision. We could not have been more pleased with our choice. Harley, as she is now called, has been a quick learner! She was potty trained within the first 3 weeks and learned sit, paw, and come within a month. Many people compliment her sweet face and she loves to give kisses to every stranger she meets.

Thank you so much! We may even adopt another special pup from the Humane Association very soon.

On May 15th, I adopted a dog, Blitz from the Nashville Humane Association - actually from the traveling truck (Teddy's Wagon) parked near Nashville Holistic Pets. I fell in love with his sweet and calm disposition after looking at, and missing out on adopting a few other dogs. I am so happy I found Blitz, as I can't imagine having any other dog now. He has been a wonderful pet - my roommate and I, as well as all our friends, love him very much. He is now just over 6 months old and is starting to learn his basic obedience commands (Except that he thinks "no" means "rollover!"). He has become a fun jogging buddy for me, as well as a fantastic cuddle buddy. He is starting to learn how to play with other dogs, which he was very scared of before. I just wanted to let the Humane Association know that things are going well, and that Blitz seems to be pretty happy!

	Thanks so much,

My sister and I have renamed Mitten, Thomas, and Pitts, Alexander ("Alex"). Thomas is such an affable cat even though he looks like a linebacker compared to Alex, who is such a sweet and playful kitten. They enjoy playing together and Thomas grooms Alex and takes care of him. Alex likes to do whatever Thomas is doing... whether that's eating from the same food bowl, drinking at the same time, napping, or playing tag with eachother. We've taken them to the Cheekwood Animal Hospital. The nurses and Dr. Crisp are so caring and attentive. Thomas just purrs and preens the whole time as the nurses gush all over him. All my questions and concerns are always answered, and I leave feeling confident that I'm providing Thomas & Alex with the best care possible to keep our forever family.

I adopted these two in June of 09 and could not love them more. Everyday, I come home to them and laugh and think of how glad I am that I came to Nashville Humane and found them. I spent months looking for a kitten, and I vistit NHA and took two home the same day.

She is a little rough with him sometimes like toddlers will be, but he doesn't mind a bit. He just takes whatever she dishes out with a wag and a kiss. He even does his best to keep her out of the street when we are all in the front yard, running in front of her and herding her back towards the porch. He is very smart and learned to do the herding thing on his own. He also knows how to sit, stay and open the door to his kennel and get in when its unlatched.
Picture it: Nashville Pride Event, June 1, 2008, Centinenial Park. It was a warm day, sun shining, and festivities everywhere. We were walking around enjoying the day and listening to the music. Teddy's Wagon was there and we had walked through browsing for our "child." Of course you want to take them all home, but you wait for that one that melts your heart. We decided to continue to enjoy the day, and were in mid-discussion about what we would need for whichever baby we decided to get. There were volunteers everywhere, and apparently "Batman" was not at Teddy's Wagon when we were there. One look into those 8 week old eyes, the one ear that was slightly bent at the tip, and we were stuck.

Today, Bane (Batman), is happy, healthly, and is loved more than a fat kid loves cake. We are planning to return to adopt a brother very soon, and find the one that melts our heart a second time. Thank you NHA for your time and dedication so people can find their furry...

Miller and Sheba

I met and adopted Miller in the spring of 2009. He stood out because he was so gentle. Soon he was a welcome addition to my home. I kept his original name because he seemed to like it. He certainly is well behaved and probably missed from his former home. Miller knows how to have fun and is a joy to have in my home. Miller is so friendly and gentle... I knew he would make a great friend.

Sheba (formerly Cindy) was adopted in September as a welcome add to our family. She is very much like Miller in that she is shy, but well behaved. They have tons of fun playing and their energy warms our home. They are loyal and well compatible friends already.

Really, try it-adopting from Nashville Humane Association is a way to bring love and fun into your home.
