Interested in Volunteering?

Volunteers play a vital role at the Nashville Humane Association and we're always looking for new friends. You can help make a difference in an animal’s life and have fun doing it! Please see below for more information about our volunteer opportunities. If you are under the age of 16, you must have a parent or guardian accompanying you at all times.

If you are interested in becoming a Nashville Humane Association volunteer, please click here to submit an online application. Maggie Odle, our volunteer coordinator, will contact you with the orientation schedule. Thank you so much for your interest!

Help is needed in the following areas:

General Animal Care- Dog Walking & Socializing Cats

One of our greatest, ongoing needs involves paying attention to our current animals! We need volunteers daily to walk our dogs and pet the cats. We have 2 acres of fenced in property for dog walking at our new building, and a cat “playroom” complete with a cat climbing tree. Volunteers must be comfortable handling animals, both large and small – we are looking for people to put some time and love into increasing our animals’ adoptability through socialization and basic training. Must attend a general animal care orientation, and minimum time commitment is 3 hours per month.

Adoption Aide

Help us make the perfect match! Greeting potential adopters and helping them meet the furry companion of their dreams increases adoption success rates. We need dedicated “people persons” to aid our adoption staff in serving the public. You’ll answer general questions about Nashville Humane Association, as well as handling general questions about particular animals. Must attend an adoption aide orientation and minimum time commitment is 3 hours per month.

Kennel Aide

Cleaning, Cleaning, Cleaning! Volunteers kick in some elbow grease to keep the shelter clean and the animals healthy. It’s a never-ending chore, but the payoff is pretty big. Grubby clothes and a hard work ethic are a must. Must attend a general animal care orientation, and there is no minimum time commitment.

Pet Assisted Therapy

Take puppies to nursing homes, hospitals, and day care centers to bring joy to thousands of people in need of a smile. This is one of our most rewarding programs, but consistency and reliability are a must – in this case it’s more than the animals that depend on you! Must attend a general animal care orientation, as well as a separate pet therapy orientation, and minimum time commitment is one pet therapy visit a month.

Fundraising Events

NHA holds events throughout the year, and from monthly off-site adoptions at area businesses to Holiday Pet Portraits, from Dog Day to Bark in the Park - we always need volunteers who are ready to travel about town. We are looking for enthusiastic, out-going volunteers to personify our mission in the public eye. Must attend a general animal care orientation, and there is no minimum time commitment.

Foster Care

This special corps of volunteers dedicates 24/7 to the care of bottle feeders and injured animals to prepare them for adoption. Sound like fun? Imagine getting up every two hours, even through the night!! This takes a special sort of volunteer, and is a big commitment. Must attend a general animal care orientation and complete additional screening and paperwork.

Clerical Work

Ok- so it's not glamorous, but we could really use help with filing, stuffing envelopes – keeping us organized! Clerical projects vary, and some can even be done from your own home. No orientation is necessary, but flexibility is important, as projects vary from week to week.

How to Get Started

Please call or e-mail to sign up for an orientation. If you would like more information, e-mail Maggie Odle or call 354-6345. If you are with an organization that would like to send a group to volunteer, please contact Maggie Odle to discuss scheduling.

Children under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. This program is not intended for those required to do court-ordered community service. For more information on court-ordered community service call 352-1010.
